Last year's season had been short, and mediocre. But not this season. Oh no. The journalist-jockey Moses Lancaster was not going to let that happen. Imma Zombie was an eccentric little speed demon with plenty of personality, and between himself and Connor they were not going to let her fade out. Furthermore she was only three years old, and the races she had would only aid her in a maiden race. This early in the year, she would mostly be up against two year olds. Moses had checked the entry forms himself (Connor had been too high at the time) and his hunch had been right. Out of the three other entries, two of them were two. One was four, but it was nothing a good work couldn't help against. The maiden race was to be eight furlongs on dirt and at seeing the track, Zombie began to prance and dance under Moses, who did his best to hold her steady.
"She's very fresh." Connor told him, eyes bloodshot. "You'll have to work on keeping her mind. You're the journalist and all that, you know that she's the only frontrunner in the field. Use that and how utterly fresh she is to your advantage, Moses. It's a gamble, but what have we to lose? He said with a grin, and Moses nodded. The seal brown filly was a frontrunner without question, but she didn't have an exact frontrunning style. She could hold the pace of the race, try her hand at being a wrecking ball, or just shoot straight out and keep going, trying to make a gap the others - mostly preceders - couldn't close in time. The latter was a gamble, but it could very well work with everyone fighting for a place just behind her. It would give them the time to kick off and get out of the way.
Horse and rider made for the gate, and Moses kept her under a short reign here. The filly had a penchant for rearing at the gate, though with every race she was getting better, and this time there was only some skittering sideways away from it as they tried to load her. Once she was in she was tense, but not out of her mind. The gate sprung open, and with them, the three year old filly. For a blink of an eye, Moses thought she'd hit the gate as it opened, but as he wasn't in the dirt right now, that wasn't the case. He gained his baring and moved Zombie away from the rail, knowing that she would be targeted and followed, and kept her on the outside for that reason. He would let the rest of the horses fight it out. For his, and Zombie's parts, they would keep away from the dogfight and keep speeding up.
Despite her protests, Moses kept her gaining speed at a typical rate for the first three furlongs. If he made what he was going to do obvious, after all, it would be no good to have them catch her before they got a chance. He started a little faster coming into the fourth furlong, and at five he let her go like it was the final furlong. The stick and the reins were both given to her, and she bolted like she was out of the gate again. He hadn't quite expected that much acceleration, but he went with it as they rounded the curve on the outside and through to the eight furlong marker, where they decelerated at least. Zombie threw her head and bucked as he tried to rein her back down, nearly throwing Moses off altogether; as though she were telling him 'I'm not done running, and if you are, get off!'
"We'll have plenty of time for that," Moses said with a grin, "In a few days. Plenty more running, and winning that time." He added, once Zombie was under control. They had nothing to lose, and a lot of energy to spend.
